How Long Do Wax Melts Last? (And How to Get the Most Out of Them)

If you're new to wax melts, one of the first questions you'll probably ask is: how long do wax melts actually last? It's a great question — and the answer depends on a few factors. In this guide, we'll break it all down and share our top tips for getting the most out of every melt.

How Long Does a Wax Melt Last?

On average, a good quality wax melt will give you 8–12 hours of fragrance per cube or piece, depending on the size. At Haliwax, our 50g wax melts are designed to deliver a powerful, long-lasting fragrance throw — so you'll get plenty of use out of each pack.

However, the exact burn time depends on several things:

  • The size of the piece you use — a larger piece will last longer but may be overpowering in a small room
  • The quality of the wax — our natural rapeseed and coconut wax blend is designed to hold fragrance exceptionally well
  • The strength of the fragrance oil — higher quality fragrance oils last longer
  • Your wax warmer — electric warmers tend to give a more consistent, longer-lasting scent than tea light burners
  • The size of your room — a small bedroom will feel more fragranced than a large open-plan living space

When Should You Change Your Wax Melt?

You'll know it's time to change your wax melt when you can no longer smell the fragrance, even when the wax is melted. The wax itself doesn't evaporate — only the fragrance oil does. So the wax will still look the same, but it simply won't smell anymore.

A good tip: let the wax cool and solidify, then pop it out of your burner dish using a spoon or wax melt liner. This makes changing scents quick and mess-free.

Top Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Wax Melts

1. Don't overfill your burner dish
You only need a small amount of wax to fragrance a room. Start with one or two small pieces and add more if needed. Overfilling won't make the scent stronger — it'll just use up your wax faster.

2. Use the right size burner for your room
A small tealight burner is perfect for a bedroom or bathroom. For larger living spaces, consider an electric wax warmer which heats more evenly and consistently.

3. Give your nose a break
After a while, your nose gets used to a scent and you stop noticing it — this is called olfactory fatigue. If you feel like your wax melt has stopped working, try leaving the room for 10 minutes and coming back. You'll likely smell it again straight away.

4. Store your wax melts properly
Keep unused wax melts in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Heat and light can cause the fragrance to fade before you've even used them.

5. Try mixing scents
One of the joys of wax melts is that you can mix different scents together to create your own unique fragrance blend. Try combining a floral with a fresh laundry scent for something truly special.
